Blog Challenge: Truth or Lie?

Challenges are hard to resist sometimes especially when you can kill two birds with one stone! Dave Dodgson from the super Reflections of a Teacher and Learner blog has set up an interesting Truth or Lie? challenge amongst fellow bloggers. You can find out more about this fab challenge and view links to Dave's and other bloggers responses on this post: This is My Truth (or is it?), Tell Me Yours - A Blog Challenge.

I found this Dilbert comic strip via Twitter today, and thought it is very apt indeed for this post. Thanks to @ Sandymillin for tweeting it!

The Challenge
Here is the challenge:
  • Post a video, audio recording or just a regular post on your blog in which you state 5 facts about yourself - 3 truths and 2 lies.
  • Invite your PLN to quiz you and speculate on what the lies are!
To complete this challenge, I first made a Powerpoint presentation and then I used a Jing screencast to video capture the slides. I am still very much a newbie Jing user and it took me a few attempts and deletions to get it right!! I am not sure about the sound. Hopefully you can hear it ok.

In my presentation, I say five facts about my life, but only three are true! Can you guess which two facts about me are NOT true?? I'll post up the answers some time this week. I hope to use this video as a new "Introduction to Janet" for my next class.

Hi Janet,

Thanks for joining the challenge!

I know we are supposed to ask questions but I'm going to jump staright in and say number 5 looks too much like one of those 'Cluster Maps', which show vistors to a website! Not your travels methinks. ;)

I believe you about blogging and loving Abruzzo but I'm not sure about the olive oil production and the motorbike...

Where do you produce the olive oil? What do you do with it? Just for home use? Sell it? Give it away to Turkish oil wrestlers?

If you ride as a passenger on motorbike trips across Europe, how do you and your husband carry your things? (Iask as that was always my dad's excuse for not taking me or my mum along on one of his bike trips to Spain)

The powerpoint looks great with the jing. I am going to call into question the motorbike riding and the amount of Olive Oil you produce. The motorbike riding only because I think the others are true. I know you grow olives as we had a discussion about it at IATEFL but I think you upped the amount to make a subtle lie......mind you I am usually wrong so :-)

Hi Dave

Thanks for commenting on my Truth or Lie facts!! Without giving too much away, I can only say that I have travelled the world, and yes, you are right about the map, which just happens to pinpoint a lot of the places....

Re motorbike, my hubby is a trained motorbike instructor, so I have got used to all kinds of motorbikes over the past 2 decades :-)

We produce the olive oil in our olive grove. We have 90 trees in total, and would like to reach 100 by the end of the year:-)

We use a lot for ourselves, give some away as gifts, and also sell it privately. This helps us to maintain the olive trees, the olive oil cultivation and the picking which takes us both 2-3+ days solid. Great fun, though!!

When we travel on long motorbike journeys (eg from Abruzzo to England)all the luggage goes in the two panniers, top box and tank bag!! Even a tent can get packed!

btw What bike did your dad have?

Once again, thanks for this great challenge, Dave! I've really enjoyed doing something different.

I look forward to hearing the correct answers to all the other participants in the challenge.

Hi Shaun

Thanks so much for commenting on my blog challenge facts! I wasn't sure about how to do a ppt + Jing and I had to "tinker", I think is the appropriate word, for a little while, but got there in the end!

Good guesses, I have to say, but.... Some clues are in my reply to Dave's comment :-)

Hi Janet,

Afraid I'm too busy at the moment to come up with my own truth or lie post, but I'm happy to take part in the guessing bit!

I could be wrong as they all sound pretty convincing to me, but my guess would be that the places you say you've travelled to and the length of time you've been blogging are the porky pies (or slight exaggerations ;-)

Sue :-)

Hi Sue

Thanks for joining in the fun!! I wonder how correct your guesses are?? There is an element of truth in all of them, but 2 of them are "slight exaggerations" as you have put it so diplomatically lol.

All will be revealed soon!

Hi Janet
Great use of Jing and the sound is fine. The photo of the motorbike looks like it was taken in the UK -or do they have green wheelie bins in Abruzzo? I think your biker story may be a lie. Might be wrong though as you say they're all based in truth but some are are exaggerations. However, that may not be true either ... Anyway, I'm sure you've travelled round the world but not to all the places with the red dots as there were just too many so I think that's not true either.
Maybe you'd like to guess my Truth or Lie?

Hi Fiona

Thank you for making guesses on my facts! The photo of the motorbike with Victoria and Joey (moggies) was in fact taken in the UK! Well spotted! It's just one of the many motorbikes I've travelled on....

As for the dotted places, I have actually been to them in a way....

I'll head over and make a guess on your facts very soon. That's great you have also taken up this fun challenge!

Hi Janet
Very interesting truths. So ... maybe it's down to the length of time you've been blogging and the amount of olive oil produced?

Must do some work now!

Hi Janet
I was inspired by your post (and others) to enter this challenge, it's a nice way to get to know my PLN-friends better. I didn't want to make a video of myself as I hate seeing myself on video so thought I'd do a Jing video like yours - thanks for the idea. I had problems loading it on my blog, but looked at your page source and discovered you did it via Screencast.com so I used that idea too - thanks!

Hi Fiona

Thanks again for guessing the lies - you are absolutely correct on these 2! Well done! I have to confess there is one more which is strictly not true!! All has been revealed in this post:

Hi Lesley

Thanks so much for your comment here! I'm thrilled you've joined in the challenge and that you have also tried out Jing! I'll add the screencast info to the blog post to make the source clearer, thanks!

I'll be off to view your challenge post very shortly, and I invite all my readers to do the same :-)

Hi, Janet! This is a good way of reinventing the truth or lie game. Awesome idea on using videos. I've done the truth or lie game but i haven't tried it with videos. I'm excited to do this with jing. Thanks for posting.
